Well, I’d like to say that we fell in love with this city, but it just didn’t happen this time. We came up to San Fran towards the end of last week. We booked a spot at the San Francisco RV Resort in Pacifica, CA. Our spot literally overlooks the Pacific Ocean. There is only a 90foot drop to the beach, and then another 20 yards- and you have ocean.
Anyways, we decided to get out and try to see the town last Saturday. We booked a tour of Alcatraz and then a ‘Taste the Town’ tour.
The Alcatraz tour was amazing. I guess the first thing we learned, was that we shouldn’t take our history of the island from the movie “The Rock”. The island is the proud home to the first light house on the West Coast…as well as a variety of birds and plant life. Seeing the prison was definitely interesting-but learning about what else happened on the island was what made the trip special. Pictures from the tour are available under the links.
After that we took a 1.5 mile ferry ride back to shore and headed to catch the beginning of our next tour. To begin, let me say that I took one of these a few years back, and had a blast. Not so much this time around. Karen and I were bored out of our skulls within about 20 minutes. We started with some amazing coffee, and then the group gathered around the coffee roaster for a lesson on how coffee is prepared. Little did we know, this was going to turn into a 30 minute history lesson on the city. Not that I’m against learning the history of the city, but I paid for a FOOD tour.
Okay, enough of that whine. We walked around for about 3 hours and sampled some of the highest quality foods in the town. It was a very interesting adventure for our palates, and tried several new things. By time it was over, we were ready to go kick back and relax. So-we started the long walk back to the truck.
Of course we get to the truck, and realize someone has tried to break into it. I’m now out a window, and we have a sour opinion on the city. I’m sure it isn’t fair, but all it takes is one little break in for me to move this next to Houston on my list of places I’d rather not be. We’ve spent nearly a hour a night walking Willy down on the ocean, and that has been great for him. We’ve all had fun here in the park, but have no desires at all to go back into San Francisco itself.
